Tofu Teriyaki
Easy Tofu Teriyaki
Tofu is a versatile ingredient that can be used to create quick and delicious meals. Although I'm not a vegetarian, I don't eat much meat and I usually find myself turning to a bean source for my protein. I have tofu 3-4 times a week mostly due to convenience. However it is also one of the most nutritious protein sources available.
Last week I created this recipe from what I had available in my refrigerator. It turned out surprisingly delicious that I thought I'd share it with you. Not only does it taste good, it's also quick and easy!

Points to Remember
Make sure to use the firmest tofu you have for this recipe. If you can find deep-fried tofu (aburaage), that works just as well for this recipe.
This is one of my favorite tofu recipes because it's quick and easy as well as being delicious. Add a bowl of steaming rice and a salad or soup and you have a quick and complete meal. The recipe calls for sake but dry sherry or white wine can be used instead.
Cook Time
Prep Time: 10
Total Time: 20
Serves: 2
Ingredients
- 1 block firm tofu sliced into 4 pieces lengthwise
- 1 onion sliced
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp sake or dry sherry or white wine
- 1 1/2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp ginger grated
- 1 tbsp garlic grated
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 3 tbsp water
- 1 stalk green onions sliced (optional)
- 2 tbsp black sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions
- 1. In a shallow bowl combine the soy sauce, sake or dry sherry, sugar, ginger and garlic. Marinate the tofu slices for at least 15 minutes.
- 2. Take the tofu out of the marinade. Coat the tofu pieces with the flour and pat off the excess.
- 3. Slice onions and set aside.
- 4. With half the cooking oil saute the onions in a frying pan until translucent. Set aside.
- 5. Put oil into frying pan and cook the tofu until nicely browned on both sides. Put the cooked tofu onto plates and keep warm.
- 6. Make the sauce by heating the soy sauce mixture in the frying pan. Cook over medium heat for 1 minute. In a small cup, add the cornstarch to the water and mix well. Add the cornstarch mixture to the sauce and heat over medium heat for one minute stirring constantly.
- 7. Add the onions into sauce and mix to combine. Pour the sauce over the tofu. Add sliced green onions and black sesame seeds if desired. Serve warm.

Some Extra Tips
The best thing about this recipe is that it lets you use leftover vegetables that you already have. If you have some carrots and peas, use those instead of the onions. Practically any vegetable will work with this sauce.
To make this recipe even easier, you can simply make the sauce and pour it over tofu slices. The warm sauce over the room temperature tofus taste great! Alternatively, you can grill the marinated tofu slices and grill them and omit the sauce. Put them between slices of bread for a healthy and delicious vegetarian sandwich. Experiment with different ingredients and you'll be a tofu fan in no time!
