Japanese Fruit Sandwich
What are fruit sandwiches?
Not only are they delicious, they are extremely easy to make. They taste a bit like those super light Japanese cakes that aren't overly sweet. Never heard of a fruit sandwich before? Well that's most likely because you don't live here in Japan where the fruit sandwich is as common as peanut butter sandwiches are in America. They are sold just about anywhere-convenience stores, high-end department store food halls and restaurants.
Easy to make and super yummy!
To make them, all you need are just a few ingredients and some fruits of your choice. The recipe works best if you use soft fruits such as strawberries (not frozen), bananas and kiwis. They also work well with canned fruits but just make sure to drain them of excess liquid before using. In Japan they are made with fresh whipped cream but I've substituted cool whip to make it even easier. If you prefer to make them with the cream, you can add some sugar to give it just a bit of sweetness.
Some things to remember
- Use the freshest and ripest fruits possible
- Soft bread that's not dry is best
- Place your fruits so that they look visually appealing when cut
The great thing about fruit sandwiches is that you can make them as simple or fancy as you want. You can even make them with a single fruit like strawberries (they taste like strawberry shortcake). Although most Japanese usually eat these treats for an afternoon treat with tea or coffee, they are delicious for breakfast as well. Bon Appetit!
