Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn in Death Becomes Her
When you're down and feeling blue, there's no medicine quite like laughter.
A couple of weeks ago, a good friend of mine was going through a rough time in her life. Her father died of cancer about a month ago and two weeks later, her beloved cat suddenly fell ill and passed away a couple of days later. She was devastated to say the least and since she lived alone I thought it would be nice to invite her over for a nice dinner. Throughout the meal my friend didn't say much and I had difficulty finding the right words to comfort her. After a couple of hours, we were ready for dessert and while I was getting it ready, I decided to pop a movie into the DVD player for some much needed entertainment. I let her choose the movie from my small collection of DVDs and was surprised that she chose a movie called Death Becomes Her.
Death Becomes Her
Although the title suggests otherwise, there is no actual death that takes place in the movie. Death Becomes Her has never failed to make me laugh no matter how low I am feeling. Perhaps it's seeing Merryl Streep playing such a silly role to perfection or the dark humor of it all, it always gets me cracking up. This time was no exception and as I was preparing our dessert plates, I could see a smile creeping its way onto my friend's face. Surprisingly she's never seen the movie before and so we decided to watch the whole movie together with dessert and coffee.
This hilarious dark comedy stars the incomparable Meryl Streep, Bruce Willlis and Goldie Hawn ( boy do I miss her ). Madeline brilliantly played by Meryl Streep, is an aging Hollywood star who stole and ran away with her high-school rival Helen's (played by Goldie Hawn) fiance. Helen is determined to get revenge on Madeline and in the process, both of them discover a potion for eternal youth. However eternal youth and beauty doesn't come without consequences.
Death Becomes Her is drama, horror and comedy all wrapped up into one hilarious movie. The script is well written and the acting is superb. I consider Meryl Streep to be the greatest actresses of all time and she plays the role of self-obsessed Madeline to perfection. Goldie Hawn, in which she plays Helen who is fat and depressed at the start then transforms into a beautiful lady, plays both her characters brilliantly. Bruce Willis is the male character caught between the rivalry of the two and it's rare to see him such a sensitive role.
The magic of movies
After we finished watching the movie, it was clear that my friend felt better. She ended up opening up to me and we talked about life and loss that comes with living in this physical world. It was getting late so I gave my friend a hug and kissed her goodbye. It's funny and amazing how a good film has the ability to lift one's spirits. My friend left my apartment looking just a little bit happier than when she arrived.
Watch the trailer for this hilarious movie. Even the trailer will have you laughing.
